At the beginning of the 20th century the American circus had become a staple in lives across the country. What began modestly only one hundred years previous had blossomed into a manifestation of American cultural values. The extreme popularity and acceptance allowed the circus to boom in a dimension that was seen nowhere else in the world. People from all walks of life came to enjoy the incredible productions, but perhaps those who were employed by this complex enterprise are who we are most fascinated by today.   

Everyone from the people who sold popcorn and cold drinks (known as butchers) to those who were in charge of rigging (or the ropes and wires that supported acrobatics) were crucial parts of what made the circus “the greatest shows on earth” during its golden age. Most circus children were born into this incredible life, but it certainly was not unusual for a traveling circus to gain new members when their trains passed through poor towns…

Hank is a 24 page short story told through text and beautiful graphite drawings created specifically for children. The entire story is packaged with with a Japanese stab bound spine in a hand-sewn golden sleeve with "Hank" screen printed across the cover in red. Even the cover of this book has been fashioned after a circus ticket from the early 20th century complete with perforated edges.
